For educators

From the beginning of this year, all schools and kura are required to implement the new Aotearoa New Zealand Histories curriculum, so that our tamariki and rangatahi - our kids and young people - will grow up learning about the history of this land, and the people who came to it. It’s about time.


The new curriculum encourages schools and teachers to connect with local history: The history beneath our feet. Here are the 4 big ideas of the new curriculum:


  • Māori history is the foundational and continuous history of Aotearoa New Zealand

  • Colonisation and settlement have been central to Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories for the past 200 years

  • The course of Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories has been shaped by the use and misuse of power

  • Relationships and connections between people and across boundaries have shaped the course of Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories


Mātaimoana presents so many opportunities for exploring these big ideas. There is richness in this new curriculum, and there is such power when it is taught in a local context like Mātaimoana.

We are interested in connecting with a supporting educators with building local curriculum around Mātaimoana. We can connect you with community members who can speak with your staff and students, and help open eyes to the richness of the history beneath our feet.

Primary Resource
Te Motukairangi: History under our feet

This resource focuses on exploring the Māori history, and geography of Te Motukairangi (Miramar Peninsula) through primary source exploration. It includes a number of captioned photographs, paintings, and historical accounts. This resource can be aligned to the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories curriculum (spanning years 3-4).

This introductory resource was developed for students at Miramar North School. All educators are welcome to copy and adapt it.
